Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why are the Oscars called the Academy Awards?

The official name of the Oscar is the “Academy Award of Merit.” It got this name because it is awarded annually by the “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences” (AMPAS).

But there are several stories behind why it’s called the “Oscar”:

  • Uncle Oscar Theory: In 1931, Academy librarian Margaret Herrick reportedly saw the statue and said, “It looks like my Uncle Oscar!” This name became the most popular.
  • Bette Davis Theory: Famous actress Bette Davis claimed the back of the statue resembled her husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson, so she named it.
  • Sidney Skolsky Theory: Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky also claimed to have popularized the name.

In the 1980s, the Academy officially trademarked the name “Oscar,” and now it’s famous worldwide.

Which film has won the most Oscars to date?

Three films have jointly won the most Oscars, with 11 each:

  • Ben-Hur (1959): Won 11 Oscars out of 12 nominations.
  • Titanic (1997): Won 11 Oscars out of 14 nominations.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003): Won all 11 Oscars out of 11 nominations. It is the only film to win in every category it was nominated for.

How much is the Oscar trophy worth? How much prize money is given?

This is the most interesting question.

  • Trophy Value: It costs approximately $400 (around ₹34,000) to make an Oscar trophy. It is 13.5 inches tall, weighs 8.5 pounds, is made of Britannium metal, and is plated with 24-karat gold.
  • Can it be sold? Absolutely not! Since 1951, the Academy has a strict rule that winners cannot sell their Oscar trophies. If they wish to sell, they must first offer it back to the Academy for only $1 (one dollar). The purpose is to maintain the award’s dignity.
  • Prize Money: There is no cash prize for winning an Oscar. It is purely an award of prestige and honor. However, after winning an Oscar, a film’s earnings and the artists’ fees increase manifold.

Other Interesting Facts about the Oscars

  • Person with the most Oscars: Walt Disney won a total of 26 Oscars, which is a record.
  • Actress with the most nominations: Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Oscar 21 times to date, the most for any actor.
  • Youngest winner: Then 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1974.
  • The 45-second rule: Winners must finish their speech in just 45 seconds. The longest speech was given by Greer Garson in 1943, which lasted over 5 minutes.
