Construction & History

In 1982, the Government of Gujarat donated 100 acres of land on the banks of the Sabarmati River. The stadium was built in just 9 months and hosted its first Test match in November 1983 (India vs West Indies). In 2006, it was renovated ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.

In October 2015, on the initiative of PM Narendra Modi, the old stadium was completely demolished. L&T won the reconstruction tender in January 2016 for ₹677 crore. Construction began in December 2016 and was completed by February 2020 (final cost ~₹800 crore). The stadium was inaugurated on February 24, 2021 by President Ram Nath Kovind, and hosted its first Day/Night Test on the same day — India vs England, India won by 10 wickets.
